One of my favourite acquisitions of late.
This stunning late 18th early 19th century Scottish Rams Horn Snuff Mull just Oozes Quality and is most definitely a True Collectable Antique. During the 1700s Gentleman's clubs were being formed and snuff mulls such as this came into their own.
Being a counter top mull it would have been used to hold Snuff for patrons to help themselves. Or indeed it might have adorned a Gentleman's House where his guests could partake in a pinch or two at their leisure. Either way its an item that was most certainly for the Wealthy. These Mulls were first created in Scotland according to my research, infact tobacco, many years earlier first entered Great Britain into Scotland before heading south into England.
Our Mull has the more Desirable Silver Top as opposed to Silver Plate or Brass. Unfortunately but not Surprisingly the Full Hallmark has suffered rubbing and is Illegible but the Mulls Gorgeous Rich Patina and Overall feel tells me its much earlier rather than later, most probably late 1700s to the early / mid 1800s. Sadly as mentioned the date is rubbed so an exact date cannot be confirmed. The foot is in my opinion a later addition, perhaps the original was damaged or indeed it might not have had one at all. The Mull measures 8 inches x 8 inches by 6 inches. Please study my photos as they form part of the description.
